The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) results have finally been announced on September 8,2014. The result once again showed a grim picture with meagre 2.80 per cent teachers clearing the examination for higher classes and 11.95 per cent of teachers qualifying for teaching the primary section.
This year, CBSE-CTET changed the format by increasing the time to complete the paper as time constraint was considered to be the reason for the poor result. However, it doesn't really seem to have changed the percentage of people clearing the examination.
CTET is divided in two examinations, where Paper-I is for primary/elementary teaching and Paper-II is for higher classes. Teachers can sit for both the papers. As specified by a national daily, this year a total of 2.06 lakh teachers appeared for Paper-I and only 24,629 qualified and for Paper-II, a total of 4.59 lakh teachers appeared but only 12,843 qualified.
The CTET examination is conducted twice a year and teachers can appear as many times as they want. Once qualified, the teacher receives a CTET certificate valid for seven years. Qualifing the CTET examination is mandatory for appointment to government-funded CBSE schools and, even in private schools, clearing the CTET examination is a prerequisite.
